Solid Geometry, Sacred Geometry, math from a another view. What an amazing field of study and play opened to me with this series of pieces. Some of them with many pieces to make the whole spheres round, others still maintain all the vertices where the sides come together.
Truncated Icosahedron
This form is comprised of 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. It has the same structure as a soccer ball.
Icosahedron
The icosahedron form is made from 20 equilateral triangles, all sides of equal length. The pattern connects over the surface and makes the eye play and travel. I like to think of islands surrounded by the sea in the first one, bees at the hive making honey, the structural components of things and the last a three lobed form of the Vesica Pisces slightly altered from the first.
Icosadodecahedron
This form is made from 12 pentagons and 20 equilateral triangles. A regular polyhedron, the sides of each piece are equal in length. In each of these pieces I have used the 'grid' formed by this pattern as the basis for the surface design. They are all star forms which is a theme that has been present in my work from the beginning of the first ball. I find that the spatial relationships of these constructions is a path that my brain seems to find familiar and inspiring.
Dodecahedron
The geometric solid called Dodecahedron is a relationship of the numbers 5, 3 and 12. Dodecahedra having to do with the number 5. So 12 pentagons, a 5 sided form, join sides to form a sphere and at every vertices there are 3 corners that meet.
Great Rhombicuboctahedron
This geometric solid is formed using 6 octagons, 12 squares and 8 hexagons. The 8'' diameter sphere below has beaded channels that describe the joining seams as well as some surface detail surrounded by areas of the wool felt it is made with.
Regular Tetrahedrons
This form is made from 4 equilateral triangles. All edges are the same length. The faces make one pattern and the edges another.
Sizes vary from 3'', 4'' , 8'' ,to 18'' sides.
Sizes vary from 3'', 4'' , 8'' ,to 18'' sides.
Irregular Tetrahedrons
This form of Tetrahedron is called irregular because not all sides are of equal length. Tetrahedron shapes normally are 4 equilateral triangles making a form that is the same from any view point. When you begin to slice away at the sides some very cool shapes appear. This group is a set of prototypes to be used as the model for a much larger version, thinking big yard art. Still in the dreaming stages at this time. These are painted and vary in size from 10'' x 3'' to 8'' x 20''. They emerged over one dark rainy winter here on the island.
